Marlene woke to darkness, as usual, although she still couldn’t get used to it. Even in the height of summer, the requirement for blackout curtains meant she had been waking to darkness for years. If only the dense fabric could be removed. Marlene believed that the morning darkness was, in part, responsible for the dark mood that consistently consumed her.

Henri had given her another set of directions to memorise. She had repeated them so many times whilst lying in bed last night that she didn’t think she’d actually be able to drop off. She had, and she had woken up later than usual, which she was glad of because it now gave her less time to think. As she dressed, Marlene distracted herself with thoughts of the egg she had managed to get her hands on for breakfast; her first egg in months.

Marlene lowered her egg into the pan of bubbling water and cursed when it cracked a little and a trail of egg white leached out into the water. Listening to the egg rattling against the pan brought back memories of the farm; the only house in France that she had truly called home.
